Selecting the Right Coffee Table

Knowing How to Pick the Perfect Coffee Table for Your Living Room

A coffee table generally becomes the center or focal point of your living room. The coffee table must serve many functions in your life and becomes a place where friends and family gather around during special occasions in your life.  It is important to be sure that you think carefully about the many points that factor in to choosing the ideal coffee table for your family.  Take the time to ask yourself a few simple questions when you are thinking about purchasing a new coffee table for your home.

If you have small children it may be wise to purchase a coffee table with soft edges.  For example, using a large ottoman and placing a decorative tray on the top works great for a coffee table and is safe for early walkers with unsteady steps.

Proportions are another important aspect to remember when you are choosing your coffee table.  Does the coffee table that you are looking to purchase match the proportion of your sofa, love seat, or chairs?  You don't want to have an over-sized coffee table or an undersized coffee table.

Another factor to think about is the operation of your coffee table.  How will you and your guests be using it?  Will this be a place where people lay back and prop their feet up?  Is this table to act as a pseudo-dining table and allow people to put down a glass and a plate and possibly eat a quick meal?  Or is this just a casual table that will hold a nice center piece, a remote control, and a couple of magazines?  Its important to consider these things.

Storage is also essential for a coffee table.  Will you be using your coffee table for storage?  With the variety of different coffee tables available, you can get one with drawers, a lid, or just a top and legs, its your decision.  Whatever you decide, you have to know what you plan on storing with your coffee table in order to make the best choice.

Finally shape is a big piece of the decision.  What shape should your coffee table be?  Much of this decision is preference, do you like round, square, or rectangle?  But sometimes the way you arrange your furniture or the kind of furniture you have can determine the shape of your coffee table.  Ensure that you have thought carefully and chosen a coffee table shape that will compliment your existing furniture pieces properly.

Remember these tips and you will be well on your way to being able to choose the best coffee table for your home.  Good luck and happy decorating!
